Work Situations
The transport Kommando pushes the wagons loaded down with salt to the shaft, and brings back the empty cars, or bags of cement, gravel, or stones. A simple and stupid job, but without any break. Frenchmen, Greeks, and Russians are all put to work at it, no preference given. You walk all day long, bent over behind the wagon: one man for an empty wagon, three if itâs loaded with stone or salt, four for concrete. The stooped backs and extended buttocks are perfect targets for the blows of the civilian master workmen ⦠and the jabs of the sentries with their rifle butts. The strong prisoners form into a group quickly. The Muselmänner always find they have the same wagons they can barely get rolling. With one initial glance, the shrewd prisoners can spot the wagons that roll well, because many of the cars are rusty. ⦠We know that they can wear two men out even when theyâre empty. The track runs for many kilometers, and at some points itâs too wide, that can always end up in a catastrophe, especially at the switches. The transport Kommando lives in constant fear of a derailment.1
